Being a Professional Writer in 2021

So 2021 then.

I’m not going to make some tired joke how awful 2020 was, not least because 2021 has been even worse for me so far. Still, if anything it’s driven me to redouble my efforts when it comes to writing. I’ve spent a long time learning how to write to a standard that I feel is worth the price of admission – rather than just slinging low quality romance books on Kindle as is the trend — and this year I’m fully committed to being a full-time professional writer.

I have a Cyberpunk heist series in the works that I’ve been working on for few years now. Think Oceans Eleven meets Blade Runner, with a dash of Snowpiercer. Lots of interesting themes to explore: wealth inequality, global warming, how human is human, morality of survival. It’s going to be a ride and I hope you check out the books when they’re done.

The site hasn’t seen many updates in the last year or two; I lost the thread for a while. I plan to keep up the posts here throughout 2021 though, aiming for at least one a month even if it’s just an update on my current project. A new leaf and all that. And if I write this down and post it, then I have to hold myself accountable, that’s how it works, right?

I’ve been a bit more active on Twitter of late too, though I’m not sure why. There have been a few gems – interacting with authors like Philip Reeve and Brandon Sanderson — but mostly, the place is a playground of political bickering. Something I have zero interest in. Anyway, if you’re scrolling your feed to pass the time, feel free to drop me a message. I’m always willing to talk craft, and if you have an opinion on my books — good or bad — then even better.

Here’s to a new year and the opportunities that lie ahead.
